WHY IS BONE BROTH SO GOOD FOR YOU?

The holiday season may have come and gone, but the New England winter is still keeping us on our toes. Arriving on the quiet farm first thing in the morning, the frost crunches under my boots and I can see my breath as I hurry to get a fire going inside the store’s wood stove. Despite the few unseasonably warm days we’ve had, those icy mornings make me infinitely grateful for warm drinks—whether that’s tea, hot chocolate, or even bone broth.

Bone broth has gotten pretty trendy in the US in recent years, and for good reason. Unlike many other diet trends, bone broth isn’t new or gimmicky. People have recognized its healing power for centuries. In fact, as far back as the year 60 AD, a surgeon working under the emperor Nero noted that chicken broth had therapeutic properties.

WHAT IS BONE BROTH?

Bone broth is made from simmering bones in water for an extended period of time. As the bones simmer, the broth takes on their nutrients—namely beneficial amino acids and gelatin, the building blocks of collagen.

Collagen plays a wide range of important roles, from keeping skin healthy to cushioning and protecting our joints. Although our bodies make collagen naturally, their ability to do so diminishes with age. Providing the body with amino acids aids the production of collagen and makes sure our bodies have everything they need to continue producing this important protein.

GREAT FOR THE GUT & THE MIND

Regularly drinking bone broth is also an excellent way to keep your gut healthy. When it binds with water, the gelatin in bone broth helps food move smoothly through your digestive system. Not only does this make you feel physically better, it may also improve your mental health!

More and more studies are showing the important connection between the gut and the brain. Known as the enteric nervous system (ENS), the gut lining contains over 100 million nerve cells that are in constant communication with the brain. When you have chronic gut problems, you’re more likely to experience symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. It’s not a magic cure-all, but caring for your gut health is a great (and often delicious) way to improve your overall well-being.
